How to Effectively Resolve Costly Workers’ Compensation Cases
August 21, 2019Did you know….??? Injured Workers Carry an Estimated 50% of the Costs of an Injury
September 24, 2019Therapists are valuable resources for Employers, facilitating the health and wellbeing of Employees. Not only does this proactive approach reduce the likelihood of Employee injury on the job, which is beneficial for both the Employer AND the Employees, but it is also a great investment for employers as they look to reduce Workers’ Compensation insurance costs. Further benefits include decreased absenteeism, decreased presenteeism, maintenance of physical abilities and maintenance of productivity levels.
If you are working as a therapist to support Employee Health, it is important to watch for signs of overexertion before the issue becomes a recordable injury. Overexertion is the leading cause of injury in all age groups, and accounts for an estimated 35% of work-related injuries. Additionally, these injuries lead to lost workdays, which has a domino effect on productivity and profitability in the company.
Warning Signs of Overexertion
Four common signs of employee overexertion:
- Modification of equipment, tools, or work areas to reduce discomfort in the body or make the job more efficient
- Shaking out the hands and arms
- Rolling the head/neck or shoulders
- Feeling too tired to prepare healthy meals or exercise
When someone is overworked, it leads to fatigue. As a result, the risk of injury in the workplace goes up.
Encourage employees to take small breaks throughout the day, whether their work is sedentary or requires heavier physical activities. Also, teach employees to pay attention to the way specific actions affect their body. The key is to help employees identify early signs of overexertion so they can adjust workflow, duties or personal style to allow for rest and recovery of the affected body parts.
Implementing Ergonomic Processes
Ergonomic changes are effective in minimizing overexertion, thereby reducing workplace injuries. These changes vary based on the work set-up and the environment as well as the needs of employees collectively and the need of individual employees. A therapist understands the musculoskeletal system of the body and can quickly see complications that may be established between the worker and the work. This is just one of the many reasons why an experienced therapist is a valuable asset in the workplace.
Workplace safety is critical. Systems need to be designed with safety protocols and ongoing training for employees. All tools, gear, and machinery need to be in good condition.
